Today’s car is a fine Maserati 1952 A6G/2000 Frua Spyder. The name is all the explanation you need to decode what the car is: A6G= “Alfieri, 6 cilindri, Ghisa”, 2000 (2.0L engine), and Frua is the body designer, spyder (convertible).

1937 saw the sale of Maserati to industrialist Omar Orsi with the arrangement that the Maserati Brothers would continue working for the company for 10 years. This agreement was honored and in 1947 the Maserati brothers left but left Orsi with a excellent inline 6 cylinder engine. This was smaller in displacement in 1947 at 1.5L and produced mere 65 BHP. Sales of the Maserati were disappointing so a redesign of the A6 was made for introduction in 1951.

Frua coach works were commissioned to build the body for the new A6G and the Frua spyder design was a beauty though sales were again less than anticipated. 1951 saw 3 body styles introduced: Pinin Farina Berlina, the Viganale Coupe, and of course the Frua Spyder.

Peter Frua was one of the main body builders and designers of Turin in the fifties and sixties – the magic days of the era of sports cars and coaches. Born May 2, 1913 and died June 28, 1983, a few weeks after his 70th birthday .

All chassis had the improved 2000 cc engine now making 100 BHP. The 2.0L (1954 cc) inline 6 was still a SOHC but now was sporting 3 Weber DO4 carburetors. The 2,425 lb Spyder offered a power to weigh ratio that was hardly sports feeling 24.5 lbs/HP. It wouldn’t be until 1953 that the HP issue would be addressed by the addition of 50 more pony’s.

The Maserati chassis wheelbase was a tight 100.4″ and overall length of 160.6″. Front track was 50.2 ” and rear track 49.3″. The front suspension is coil spring double wishbone design with Houdaille hydraulic dampers, Rear suspension is coil spring live axle with Houdaille hydraulic dampers and anti-roll bar.

As convertible sports cars go, the Frua Spyder Maserati is a fine example of European sports car know how. Comfortable bucket seats and large wood grain steering wheel present the driver a ready to go feel. Gauges include tachometer for the 4 speed transmission, speedometer fuel, temperature and voltage monitor the essentials. The passenger is presented with a lovely clock inset into the glove box door.

In a very real way, 1951-52 Maserati Frua Spyder signifies the start of the future of the Maserati motor-works. The designing and building of stylish sports cars is what the Maserati name has become all about. Buyers today enjoy the rewards of decades of previous incarnations of Maserati’s as the car line has approached the near perfection we see in today’s Maserati cars. Happy hunting! :)
