I never met a Shelby I didn’t love; A Carroll Shelby designed Mustang GT that is. This 1968 Shelby Cobra GT350 Mustang certainly fits my love affair. Not only a pristine Shelby, but even one of my favorite colors, Acapulco Blue, or medium blue if you prefer. This Concours d’Elegance beauty received more than a little of my time while wandering this show.

As stated she is a 1968 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 featuring its stock 302 cid V8 engine. The 289 of 1967 was replaced by the 302 V8 with 10.5: compression, and it had a rated 250 BHP @ 4800 rpm. Torque came in at 310ft-lb @ 2800 rpm. The 302 in this GT350 year had an optional supercharger but this isn’t one of these cars (alas), but if it had this option horsepower would have bumped up to healthy 335 HP @ 5200 rpm and a little more torque to 325ft-lb @ 3200 rpm. All had a 4 barrel carburetor, and this car has the optional ram air fiberglass hood (not available in a supercharged car).

The engine had all the little goodies that designated it a cobra engine, the custom valve covers and the huge Cobra air cleaner. Details are there as well, a correct Autolite battery as well the correct Autolite decals where appropriate (though I am no expert, it could be wrong too for all I knew, but they added to appeal for certain). Autolite ignition throughout, and correctly part-numbered coolant hoses. Every item clean enough to serve Sunday dinner on, all in all really a fine job.

This car has the heavy duty close ratio 4 speed manual transmission with console shifter. Final drive gears are 3.89:1 ” Equa-lok” rear axle. Brakes are front disc, rear drum performance power type with dual master cylinder and low pressure indicator. High rate front coil springs up front and 4 leaf heavy duty rear leaf springs for the suspension along with adjustable ratio shock absorbers front and back. The power steering is a fast 16:1 ratio, and a .94″ diameter front stabilizer bar adds to the driving experience.
