Ah the Dodge Dart Swinger. The economy minded speed demon from Dodge first introduced in 1969. How many times were you blown away by these sleepy little cars at those traffic light wars? Clones are fine, they don’t command the big bucks of the genuine articles, but they can be driven. You buy a genuine no miles Dodge Dart Swinger that is a show winner you wont be driving it around on the weekends, and really what is the point of owning a muscle car if you can’t wring her out now and then? That being said, lets have a quick look at John’s great clone Swinger.

The 1969 Darts had a variety of engine choices but for the Swinger the real Swingers had the new 340 cid small block engine. In its stock form it made 275 BHP but Johns car here makes a little more, thanks to camshaft, blueprinting the engine and a ton of hours massaging as much horsepower out of her without sacrificing driveability. The dyno said 403 horsepower which is a whopping jump from stock. Edelbrock carburetor, MSD ignition, and Hooker headers exiting into dual exhaust help finalize that power.

The car has power front disc brakes and power steering. Unlike a genuine Swinger, this one has a TorqueFlite 727 automatic transmission. It has a shift kit and 2500 rpm stall convertor so it isn’t all bad ;-). The genuine Swinger usually has a 4 speed close ratio transmission with Hurst shifter. John’s car has 8 3/4” Sure-grip rear end with a sensible 3.55:1 gears. He didn’t want the usual 4.11:1 gears so popular with these winding motors as he likes to take longer highway trips and the screaming high revs caused by the 4.11’s is annoying and pretty hard on the motor over time.

The interior is bone stock with split bench seats up front. It has power…well power nothing actually. Power wipers heheh. He did add gauges and a tachometer to monitor the vitals. Oh, and a 2500 watt stereo lurks as hidden stereo system. Guess he likes his tunes when he is going fast…

The exterior is great, looks very much a Swinger with the rear stripes, and the hood louvers up front. The Dark Green Metallic paint is period correct. The addition of Centerline wheels 15 x 8 “ in the rear, 15 x 6” up front with low profile black wall tires rounding out the demon look.

I can only say if you haven’t experienced the power of a Dart Swinger before do try to get your hands on one, you wont be disappointed. I would also have to say watch out for these beasties on the road, they look pretty tame by today’s standards but they will blow the doors off your car before you can blink. A Dart weights only around 3,097 pounds so power to weight ratio in John’s is 13:1, A car like this WILL change your view of the world! Happy Hunting! :)
